Recipients of the 2013 ATVB Early Career Awards
This is the eighth year of competition for Atherosclerosis/Lipoprotein, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB) Early Career Awards. The awards recognize articles published in ATVB in 2012 that were submitted by new investigators and judged to be the most outstanding in the ATVB sections of the journal. The 3 awards are named for Dr Daniel Steinberg, who devised a method to determine the site of degradation of the proteins and lipids of a lipoprotein, which led to the concept of selective uptake of cholesterol and apoprotein that characterizes the reverse cholesterol transport pathway; Dr Karl Link, who identified dicoumarol as the hemorrhagic factor in spoiled sweet clover hay and then developed dicoumarol and warfarin as anticoagulant drugs; and Dr Werner Risau, who formulated key concepts for the regulation of angiogenesis, challenged the prevailing dogmas about angiogenic factors, and proposed the currently accepted hypothesis that several growth factors act sequentially to mediate vasculogenesis, angiogenesis, and vascular remodeling.
In the eighth year of the award, 618 articles were submitted for the awards. Recipients of the awards are as follows:
Jolanta M. Siller-Matula, MD, PhD, Medical University of Vienna, the 2012 recipient of the Karl Link Early Career Award in Thrombosis, for her article “ARC15105 Is a Potent Antagonist of Von Willebrand Factor Mediated Platelet Activation and Adhesion,” (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2012;32:902–909).
Michael J. Lipinski, MD, PhD, University of Virginia Health System, the 2012 recipient of the Daniel Steinberg Early Career Award in Atherosclerosis/Lipoproteins, for his article “Loss of Id3 Increases VCAM-1 Expression, Macrophage Accumulation, and Atherogenesis in Ldlr−/− Mice,” (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2012;32:2855–2861).
Alberto Rissone, PhD, National Human Genome Research Institute/National Institutes of Health, the 2012 recipient of the Werner Risau Early Career Award in Vascular Biology, for his article “The Synaptic Proteins b-Neurexin and Neuroligin Synergize With Extracellular Matrix-Binding Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A During Zebrafish Vascular Development,” (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2012;32:1563–1572).
The recipients will be honored at the 14th Annual Conference on ATVB and will receive a plaque, travel support (provided by the ATVB Council), and a check for $2500, provided by Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins.
