The goal of ATVB is to rapidly publish the best work related to atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology. We will describe briefly several developments toward that goal.

High-Quality Articles

The Institute for Scientific Research has placed all American Heart Association journals in the Peripheral Vascular Disease category. ATVB has maintained its ranking within this category as the leading journal in each of its areas of focus: atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology. We recognize the many limitations of calculation of impact factor, but nevertheless, one of our goals is to increase the impact factor to be competitive with journals that focus on a more general audience.

Journal Pages

The American Heart Association Publishing Committee, chaired by Dr Harold Strauss, has approved additional pages for the Journal. This is impressive, because the AHA has several missions, and the increase in pages requires a substantial additional commitment to the Journal. This step provides strong recognition of the importance of journals in the research and educational missions of the AHA.

This is the first increase in pages for the Journal in many years. The increase will allow us to continue to publish approximately 20% to 25% of papers, despite a rapid increase in submissions, and to avoid accumulation of a backlog of papers. Because we do not have a backlog, we are able to publish papers within 5 to 8 weeks of acceptance.

ATVBeFirst

Accepted manuscripts are published ahead of print approximately 7 to 14 days after acceptance. The first posting on ATVBeFirst occurred in January 2002. The expedited electronic publication has been accomplished very smoothly.

Japan and Vascular Biology

With leadership from Professor Akira Takeshita, the number of manuscripts submitted to the Asian office of ATVB has doubled in the past 3 years. We are now exploring the possibility of a formal relationship of the Journal with vascular biologists in Japan. This relationship would parallel that of the Journal with the ATVB Council of the AHA and the European Vascular Biology Association. This step emphasizes the importance and excellence of manuscripts submitted to the Journal from Japan and recognizes the rapidly growing importance and impact of vascular biology.

Summary

In general, the Journal seems to be doing very well. ATVB maintains leadership in publishing outstanding articles in several critical areas of research, the number of manuscript submitted to the journal continues to increase rapidly, papers are published quickly in electronic form and in print, and the likelihood of formalizing ties with Japanese scientists is exciting. We remain indebted to our readers, authors, editorial board, and the AHA publishing committee. We strongly encourage and appreciate your feedback and suggestions for improvement of the Journal.
